SIVASAGAR, Oct 24: The 8th Sivasagar Book Fair and 2nd Yuva Mahotsav organised by ‘Khoj’ in association with Sivasagar district administration was inaugurated by Dr Jiten Hazarika, vice chancellor, Dibrugarh University. The programme commenced on Sunday in presence of Sivasagar deputy commissioner, Aditya Vikram Yadav; MP (Rajya Sabha) Kamakhya Pd Tassa; litterateur Khagendranath Bhuyan; ONGC executive Jameel Passa; IS Sivasagar Kamaljyoti Gogoi, Dr Prakash Kotoky, Buddhin Mishra and a host of writers and book lovers at the Boarding Field.
Dr Hazarika in his speech said, “Books will certainly have their place in human society, but only those that tell us true and genuine stories of human values.” Quoting APJ Kalam and Satyanath Bora books, Dr Hazarika said that their books are read and re-read only because of their sincerity and their purpose of educating humans.
He said that most of the new writers are writing books for bolstering career prospects or recognition.
Aditya Vikram Yadav welcomed the guests and said, “The books fairs are centres of intellectual adda of writers, publishers, and book lovers.”
Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, working president of the organising committee, said, “Books will continue to attract people despite the emergence of digital modes and other options.”
Noted writer and former teacher of Sivasagar Govt HS School Khagendranath Bhuyan was honoured with ‘Rongpur Gaurov’ title by the organisers. Over 40 booksellers have confirmed their participation in the book fair.
