GOSSAIGAON, March 19: Several shops were gutted as a major fire broke out in Hauriapet area of Gossaigaon in the early hours of Sunday.
The fire broke out around 4 am, an official source said.
Altogether 12 shops were reduced to ashes, but no one was injured in the blaze, they added.
The fire caused damage worth Rs 1 crore before it was brought under control, police said.
The fire, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit at a shop first and then fast spread in the congested market.
A police team led by Sapkata police station in-charge Shiv Prasad Kalita also helped in dousing the fire.
On the other hand, Sajal Kumar Singha, MCLA, 3 No Srirampur BTC constituency immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and promised financial assistance to the affected shopkeepers.
The shopkeepers sought state government and BTR governments help in subsidising their businesses.
