HAFLONG, May 8: The Indian Red Cross Society of Dima Hasao district observed the ‘World Red Cross Day’ with this year theme – ‘Everything we do comes #fromtheheart’ on Monday in Lodi village Haflong to mark the birth anniversary of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of International Committee of Red Cross.
The secretary of IRCS Dima Hasao district branch, Dr Nirmal Singh highlighted the insight of Red Cross Society and its history of enduring commitment in undertaking humanitarian services to the community in the district during emergency, disaster response and urged all to continue good work for the people.
On the auspicious day, the Padma Shri awardee Dr Ramkuiwangbe Newme, life member of IRCS and social worker of Dima Hasao district was also present along with H Kuwame, vice president of N E Heraka Association and took part in the day long program.
In his speech, Dr Ramkuiwangbe Newme extended her gratitude to all the members for their services to the community in the district and opined that the Red Cross building which is now being occupied by the CJM Court should be handed over to its IRCS so that it can spread the humanitarian services across the district.
On the day, several numbers of people from Lodi village and its nearby area were distributed with essential items like tarpaulin, mosquito net and other essentials. Apart from that, a plantation program was also done by the members of IRCS in educational institutes situated in the Lodi village in memory of Sir Jean Henry Dunant. The chairman of IRCS, Pauramduing Jeme congratulated all the volunteers for their selfless service to the people of Dima Hasao. The program was also attended by the IRCS treasurer B K Chanda, and members – Parbati Saha Pannalal Sarkar and Mohini Saha.
On the significant day, a series of program was organised by the IRCS from May 1 to 8 in Laisong and Hezaichak viz. health and wellness camps, plantation of trees, enrollment of members, discussion on future plan and project, felicitation to frontline social workers, need based distribution of mosquito nets and essentials to mention few to disaster affected people till May 8, 2023.
It is to be mentioned here that World Red Cross Day is also known as Red Crescent Day and is celebrated on May 8 every year. This date marks the birth anniversary of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, who is the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He is also a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was born on May 8, 1828. The design of the Red Cross originates from the First Geneva Convention in 1864.
