ITANAGAR, Nov 6: The Union Cabinet on October 1 decided to celebrate 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ across India, recognising its historic role during the freedom struggle. The song, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterji in 1875 and famously recited by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896, gained prominence during the Swadeshi Movement and became a symbol of nationalism and resistance against British rule. It was later designated the national song by Dr Rajendra Prasad in 1950.
Dongoli Libang, vice president of Arunachal Pradesh state unit, said the celebrations will include collective recitations of “Vande Mataram” by 150 participants at 150 locations, along with public gatherings. In the state, central events will be held at six locations beginning on November 7 at VKV Chimpu with over 2,000 students participating. MLA Tojir Kadu will join the celebrations there. Collective recitations and public programmes will continue across district centers from November 8 to 15.
The Governor will celebrate the day at Raj Bhawan, Itanagar along with senior state officials. Chief Minister Pema Khandu will participate in Tawang, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein at Namsai and BJP state president at Pasighat. The programme will also be observed at the state BJP headquarters and by the state government, highlighting the song’s historical significance and its role during India’s independence movement.
Libang appealed to all sections of society to participate in the celebrations across the state and the country.
