DAPORIJO, Sept 27: A pall of grief has descended over Daporijo, the headquarters of Upper Subansiri district, following the demise of Nete Yamak Kena, a revered matriarch and one of the region’s earliest women entrepreneurs.

She breathed her last earlier this week at Adithya Hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam, after a prolonged illness.

Kena, wife of late Tarik Kena, is remembered as a trailblazer whose pioneering spirit helped shape the socio-economic landscape of Upper Subansiri.

Her entrepreneurial journey began in the 1970s, at a time when civil infrastructure and commercial activity in the newly established district headquarters were still at a nascent stage.

Establishing one of the first major retail outlets in Daporijo, she not only challenged the traditional barriers faced by women in commerce but also laid the foundation for a budding local economy.

Community elders and officials recall her enterprise as a cornerstone in the district’s commercial history.

More than a personal achievement, her venture inspired a generational shift, motivating local women to pursue self-reliance and explore entrepreneurship.

Her name has thus become synonymous with resilience, foresight, and community progress.

Condolences have poured in from across the state.

She left us for her heavenly abode, leaving behind a void that can never be filled. I offer my final prayers and bid farewell to her.”

Kena was regarded as the bedrock of her family and community.

She is survived by one daughter, three sons, and several grandchildren, who have pledged to uphold her enduring legacy of strength, integrity, and service to society.

The people of Daporijo have joined in solidarity with the bereaved family, paying tribute to a woman whose industrious spirit and determination helped chart the course of the modern town.

According to family sources, the last rites and final observances will be performed in Daporijo in the coming days, with details to be announced shortly.
