ITANAGAR, Sept 24: The NSS Units of Dera Natung Government College Itanagar (DNGCI) on Wednesday celebrated NSS Day 2025 with a comprehensive programme that combined induction, orientation and career counselling sessions for newly enrolled volunteers of the 2025–26 academic session.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from first-time entrants who pledged to dedicate themselves to the ideals of the National Service Scheme.
Delivering the keynote career counselling session, DNGCI Principal Dr MQ Khan highlighted the growing relevance of NSS volunteers in today’s society.
He noted that the NSS and NCC units of DNGCI have consistently contributed manpower to state government initiatives and civil society programmes.
Pointing to emerging opportunities in NGOs, corporate sectors, and even international organisations such as the United Nations, Dr Khan emphasised that active involvement in NSS builds discipline, leadership and service-oriented skills that can shape promising careers.
In his address, Dr Khan also underscored the importance of maintaining mental and physical health, reminding students that no career can thrive without balance in both spheres.
He warned against the ill-effects of social media addiction, encouraging students instead to use digital platforms as a “digital library of knowledge.”
Stressing that time is the most precious non-renewable resource, he urged the volunteers to pursue discipline, discover their strengths, and begin career preparation early.
Whether aspiring for UPSC, APPSC or other competitive examinations, Dr Khan advised the students to focus on academic performance, invest extra effort in preparation, and select their circle of friends wisely. His address concluded with an interactive question–answer session, in which students engaged with practical queries on career paths.
The induction session on NSS was conducted by Programme Officer Dr Kipa Roni, who acquainted the new volunteers with the history, objectives, structure and activities of the scheme.
He explained the motto “Not Me, But You” and briefed students about regular service activities, annual camps, and Bath Village under Itanagar Circle, which has been adopted by DNGCI’s NSS units.
Programme Officer Botem Moyong followed with a presentation on the MyBharat Portal, explaining its registration process and the benefits it provides to volunteers, including official recognition, service records, and access to national opportunities.
Programme Officer Phuntso Gombu stressed the role of discipline within NSS, pointing out that punctuality, attendance and regular communication with programme officers are vital to the smooth functioning of the units.
He also appealed to the students to work towards eliminating single-use plastic within the college NSS community.
Special emphasis was placed on discouraging the use of plastic water bottles, with volunteers urged to adopt sustainable alternatives.
The programme was anchored by students Chukhu Mepu of B.A. Vth Semester Economics and Sima Tok of B.A. Vth Semester Political Science.
The welcome address was delivered by Hema Das of B.A. Vth Semester. Overall coordination was ensured by the team of programme officers comprising Phuntso Gombu, Botem Moyong, Kipa Roni and Tarh Achi, who supervised the successful conduct of the day-long event.
The NSS Day Celebration at DNGCI thus went beyond a ceremonial observance, serving as a platform to prepare young volunteers for service, instil values of discipline and responsibility, and guide them towards meaningful career paths. With the new batch of volunteers inducted, the NSS units of the college are set to continue their tradition of contributing actively to society.
