East Siang DC calls for strengthened urban flood management and disaster preparedness measures

NAMSAI, June 12: East Siang Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani on Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting at the DC’s Conference Hall in Pasighat, focusing on monsoon preparedness, urban flood management, and overall disaster mitigation planning.

The review, held under her capacity as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), was attended by administrative officers, heads of departments, and senior police officials.

According to an official statement, Jiwani stressed the need for strengthening the Urban Flood Management Cell in the district and instructed concerned departments to submit detailed reports on the current status of city drainage systems.

She also called for updates on desilting and cleaning operations across Pasighat and its sub-divisional areas.

The DC underscored the importance of effective planning for the upcoming monsoon season, particularly in terms of stockpiling essential and lifesaving medicines, ensuring availability of essential commodities and petroleum products for at least three months, and timely pruning of overgrown trees to prevent accidents.

She also highlighted the necessity of identifying vulnerable buildings and locations, developing robust rescue and rehabilitation strategies, and preparing temporary shelters at Pasighat, Mebo, and Ruksin sub-divisions.

Jiwani instructed all departments to maintain updated manpower and resource inventories and ensure timely dissemination of public safety advisories through various media platforms.

She further emphasized coordinated efforts among departments to ensure seamless response mechanisms during any natural calamity.

During the meeting, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) T Tasi briefed attendees on ongoing initiatives, including the submission of daily situation reports.

He informed that Aapda Mitra volunteers are actively conducting Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities in the district, such as making public announcements in Pasighat and promoting awareness on dos and don’ts during the prevailing heatwave conditions.

Earlier in the day, Jiwani also held a coordination-cum-interactive session with administrative officers and heads of departments.

She called for proactive governance and reorientation of administrative approaches to ensure government welfare and development schemes effectively reach intended beneficiaries.

“We must work together as Team East Siang to make our governance delivery more inclusive and efficient,” she remarked.

Jiwani also reiterated the district administration’s commitment to promoting industrial development and entrepreneurial growth, stating that efficient urban management and sustainable planning in Smart City Pasighat remain key priorities.

“Our goal is to make East Siang one of the top-performing districts in all developmental indicators,” she added.

The meeting was attended by SDPO  Akanksha T, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Mebo) Nancy Yirang, Municipal Executive Officer Jayanti Pertin, SDO Sanjay Taram, Deputy SP Ayup Boko, administrative officers, and heads of various departments.
