ITANAGAR, July 8: Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal Surat Singh, AVSM, VM, VSM, called on the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt General K T Parnaik (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, YSM, at the Raj Bhavan in Itanagar on Tuesday, where the two held detailed discussions on strategic and developmental issues concerning the frontier state.
According to an official statement, the high-level meeting focused on a wide spectrum of topics including national security, regional defence preparedness, and disaster response mechanisms in the context of Arunachal Pradesh’s geographically sensitive and climatically vulnerable landscape.
Both leaders expressed concern over the recurring disruptions caused by monsoon-triggered landslides and floods in the state, acknowledging the critical need for robust coordination between the civil administration and the Indian Armed Forces during emergencies.
The Governor underscored the strategic importance of Arunachal Pradesh in India’s defence matrix and praised the Indian Air Force (IAF) for its continuous efforts in maintaining operational readiness in the challenging terrain of the Northeast.
In addition to military preparedness, the Governor emphasized the importance of deepening civil-military engagement by encouraging youth participation in national service.
He urged Air Marshal Singh to enhance outreach efforts, especially in areas surrounding Advance Landing Grounds (ALGs), which serve as vital air logistics hubs for remote and border areas.
“Young people living in far-flung regions of Arunachal Pradesh have great potential and a deep sense of patriotism. Regular engagement by the armed forces, particularly the Air Force, can motivate them to channel that spirit towards building a disciplined and service-oriented life,” Governor Parnaik said.
He further suggested that awareness campaigns, mentorship programmes, and exposure visits be organised to inspire and guide interested youth to consider careers in the Armed Forces.
Responding to the Governor’s suggestions, Air Marshal Surat Singh assured full cooperation from the Indian Air Force.
He reaffirmed the Eastern Air Command’s commitment to the safety, progress, and well-being of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
“The IAF remains dedicated to not only protecting the skies but also supporting the civilian population in times of need,” he said.
The meeting also touched upon the strategic role played by ALGs in facilitating not just defence operations, but also humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and connectivity in some of the most inaccessible regions of the state.
The official statement described the interaction as a reaffirmation of the Armed Forces’ enduring commitment to Arunachal Pradesh, both in terms of defence and as partners in development and nation-building.
