NAHARLAGUN, July 3: Panic gripped residents of C-Sector, Naharlagun, on Thursday afternoon when a 19-year-old man allegedly went on a violent spree, attacking bystanders with a machete.
The incident occurred around 1:15 PM, and according to an official statement issued by Naharlagun Police, the accused was apprehended following prompt and coordinated action by law enforcement.
As soon as verbal information about the attack was received, a police team led by Inspector K. Dev, Officer-in-Charge of Naharlagun Police Station, swung into action.
The accused attempted to flee the area but was captured after a brief chase on Pachin Road. A formal complaint was filed, and two separate cases under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been registered against him.
The accused was identified as Daman Nima, aged 19, son of the late Tada Nima and a resident of Village Nima under Daporijo Police Station in Upper Subansiri district.
He is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation as part of the investigation.
Two individuals were injured in the unprovoked attack.
They have been identified as Nehru Murtem, 57, son of the late Tagam Murtem, and Hage Anku, 54, daughter of the late Hage Babing.
Both victims are residents of C-Sector, Naharlagun, and were reportedly assaulted without warning. They were rushed to a medical facility for treatment, and further updates on their condition are awaited.
In its official communication, Naharlagun Police confirmed that all legal procedures are being followed and that a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the attack.
The swift response by the police has drawn appreciation from local residents for effectively neutralising a potentially deadly situation.
