NAMSAI, July 10: A joint surprise market inspection was conducted across Namsai township on Thursday, July 10, by a multi-departmental team as part of a coordinated effort to ensure strict enforcement of commercial, health, and safety regulations.
The inspection was led by officials from the Department of Trade and Commerce, Legal Metrology, Health and Family Welfare, Tax and Excise, Veterinary, Police, and the District Administration.
According to an official statement, the joint team inspected various business establishments and marketplaces to assess compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
As a result of the operation, penalties were imposed on 13 establishments found operating without valid trade licences.
These actions were taken in accordance with the provisions of the notification dated July 29, 2009.
In addition, the Legal Metrology Department booked two cases under Section 18(1) of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, read with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
The violations involved the sale of packaged goods lacking mandatory declarations, such as Maximum Retail Price (MRP) and the date of manufacturing or packing—both required for consumer protection and transparency in trade.
Furthermore, one establishment was found using unverified weights in commercial transactions, a violation booked under Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
Such practices are considered serious offences as they can lead to consumer exploitation and unfair trading.
The inspection team emphasized that such surprise checks will continue in the future to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and to safeguard consumer rights and public health.
The district authorities reiterated their commitment to transparency, accountability, and lawful business practices in the region.
