10 arrested after youth dies in Jorhat assault

JORHAT, April 22: A 33-year-old man, bedanga bhushan baruah of Chandan Nagar, Jorhat, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after being brutally assaulted by a group of youths late Sunday night.

The incident occurred as he was returning home from a Bihu function in the locality.

According to police sources, ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault based on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.

Interrogation of the accused is currently underway.

Baruah was initially admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital late Sunday night and was later shifted to a private hospital on Monday morning in a state of coma.

He was admitted to the ICU with severe head injuries and placed on a ventilator.

Doctors conducted a critical surgery lasting over three hours in the afternoon, but despite efforts, he succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.

Following a First Information Report (FIR) lodged by Baruah’s family, police launched an investigation that led to the swift arrests.

The arrested persons have been identified as Pranab Gowala, Rohit Rajput, Ashwajit Barua, Babu Ali, Debajit Barua, Bikash Chetry, Abdul Noor, Mon Barua, Ramjan Khan and  Abdul Rahim.

Booked uñder Sections 126 (2), 118 (2), 109 (1), 3 (5) and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the Jorhat Police Station case number 202/2025.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Baruah’s father said his son had reportedly asked a group of youths near the Bihu venue not to create a disturbance.

Shortly after, he was attacked and later found unconscious by friends, who rushed him to the hospital.

Grieving the loss, the father urged police to take stringent action against the attackers and to prevent such violent incidents in the future.

Residents of the locality also expressed outrage and demanded justice.

It is worth noting that a similar incident occurred on March 15 during Holi celebrations in the JPR locality, where another youth suffered serious head injuries following an assault.

Four individuals were arrested in connection with that case.
