DIPHU, Feb 23: The 32nd annual general conference of Karbi literary body- Karbi Lammet Amei (KLA) kicked off on Friday with great fervor, marked by the inauguration of the entrance gate by executive member (EM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and president of the reception committee, Surjya Rongphar.
The conference venue, Rongthelu Aklam in Rongthelu, located approximately 20 km away from the district headquarters, will host the event for four consecutive days, concluding on February 25.
Delegates from 95 Aro Amei (branch committees), 10 Longri Amei (regional committees), and central committee members graced the occasion. The conference also drew participants not only from the host district but also from various districts of Assam, as well as from Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
On the second day of the conference, a notable event unfolded with the release of 26 books, including translations by different writers, published by the KLA. Dr Numal Momin, deputy speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, attended the event as the chief guest, expressing his commitment to the enrichment of the Karbi language and literature.
Dr Momin announced that the Government of Assam has granted special casual leave for its employees to participate in the conference. He also conveyed that upon the request of Karbi Lammet Amei, the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved special leave for employees serving across Assam for the entire duration of the KLA conference.
“Karbi Lammet Amei has requested me to approach chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for granting special leave for employees serving in various parts of Assam. The same has been approved by the CM. We thanked CM for his kindness and love for the Karbi Anglong and KLA,” Dr. Momin added.
In a bid to bolster the Karbi language, Dr Momin urged Karbi Language Teachers (KLT) employed in various government schools by the KAAC to diligently teach the language to students.
He emphasised the importance of every resident of Karbi Anglong being proficient in the Karbi language for its development.
Furthermore, Dr Momin declared his lifetime membership of KLA, expressing his delight in joining the esteemed literary body.
Addressing the need for standardisation in writing the Karbi language, Dr Dharamsing Teron, director of the Centre for Karbi Studies, stressed the importance of uniformity to avoid discrepancies in spelling and usage.
The evening session witnessed a vibrant poets’ meet, where poets enthralled the audience with their poetic renditions, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the Karbi community.
The book release event saw the presence of EM, KAAC Surjya Rongphar, Mukut Mahanta, Principal Incharge of Diphu Government College Bernard Rongphar, and writer Pabitra Bora, among others, with Karon Hansepi, the vice president of KLA, presiding over the program.
