JORHAT, Jan 1: On the first day of the new year, Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka, expressed optimism about transforming the university into one of the country’s leading institutions in agricultural education. Addressing the AAU fraternity at a programme held at the Madhab Chandra Das Memorial Auditorium on the university campus, Dr Deka said steps are being taken to strengthen the institution through advancements in education, research and extension activities. He highlighted AAU’s significant contributions to Assam’s economy through agriculture and noted its notable achievements in agricultural research.
Dr Deka said that AAU has made steady progress through systematic education, technological development, creation of new patents and acquisition of commercial rights. He also acknowledged the vital role played by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and regional research stations in enhancing research and extension outreach.
Referring to academic achievements, the Vice-Chancellor said that 62 professor-scientists and 22 students from the university have achieved success at the national level. Describing students as the pillars of the university, he noted that AAU students have excelled not only in academics but also in various other fields, preparing them for future advancement in agriculture and allied sectors.
The programme was anchored by AAU Registrar Tapan Kumar Gohain and attended by senior university officials including Dean of the College of Agriculture Dr Prasanna Kumar Pathak, Director of Research Dr Sanjay Kumar Chetia, Director of Postgraduate Studies Dr Anup Kumar Das, Director of Students’ Welfare Dr Binay Kumar Medhi and In-charge Director of Extension Education Dr Ranjit Kumar Saud.
Heads of departments, professor-scientists, research scientists, staff members and students from the Jorhat campus were present at the event. Faculty members, researchers, students and staff from AAU’s affiliated colleges outside Jorhat, along with officials from research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, participated through an online platform.
