KOKRAJHAR, June 12: The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) observed the 36th Bodoland Martyrs’ Day on Monday at various locations in the districts of Bodoland Territorial Region and across the state of Assam. The day marks the death anniversary of Sujit Narzary, the first martyr of the Bodoland movement.
The Bodoland Movement, initiated in 1987 under the leadership of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of ABSU, aimed to establish a separate Bodoland statehood within the Indian constitution. The movement subsequently led to the signing of three Bodo Peace Accords to date: the BAC accord (Bodoland Autonomous Council) in 1993, the BTC accord (Bodoland Territorial Council) in 2003, and the BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) accord in 2020. These accords have paved the way for good governance, welfare, and comprehensive development in the region.
Martyr Sujit Narzary, who lost his life on June 12, 1987, during the Bodoland Movement, is honoured every year on this day as Bodoland Martyrs’ Day by ABSU. In Kokrajhar, the district committee of ABSU, in collaboration with the South Kokrajhar Anchalik Committee, observed the day at the Bhatipara Martyr Tomb near Kokrajhar. Kripesh Daimary, president of the Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU, hoisted the students’ union flag at half-mast and paid floral tribute to martyr Sujit Narzary.
The event was attended by leaders from various student unions, social organisations, including Lawrence Islary, MLA of Kokrajhar East LAC, Jiran Basumatary, MLA of Gossaigaon, Krishna Gopal Basumatary, director of UN Academy, Dr Subung Basumatary, chairman of Upendra Nath Brahma Trust and registrar of Bodoland University, former ABSU leaders, UPPL leaders, and Tribal Sangha leaders, who all paid homage to martyr Sujit Narzary.
Similarly, in Udalguri, the central committee of ABSU, in collaboration with the Udalguri district committee, observed Bodoland Martyrs’ Day at Khwirabari Mahiranga playground. Khwrwmdao Wary, vice president of ABSU, hoisted the students’ union flag and paid homage to the martyrs. An open discussion on the contributions and sacrifices of martyr Sujit Narzary was also held.
Wary emphasised that the students’ union will continue to remember the contributions of Bodoland martyrs and stressed the significance of commemorating their sacrifices for the cause of Bodoland statehood. He expressed the community’s commitment to honouring the martyrs’ families and called upon the younger generation to actively participate in the progress and development of society.
