Ajanta Neog launches ‘Poshan Maah’ in Morigaon

Minister underscores the importance of nutrition in empowering women & children, pledges enhanced support through govt initiatives

MORIGAON, Sept 2: Ajanta Neog, minister of Finance, Women and Child Development, government of Assam, inaugurated the ‘Poshan Maah’ at Tarun Ram Phukan Playground in Morigaon on Monday. The event began with a procession from Gandhi Field to Tarun Ram Phukan Playground, where Anganwadi workers and other women actively participated, showcasing their commitment to the cause. Upon the minister’s arrival at the venue, she was warmly welcomed by the district commissioner of Morigaon and the director of Women and Child Development.

Minister Neog took part in a traditional ceremony, symbolically feeding pregnant women nutritious food known as ‘Matri Amrit’, highlighting the importance of nutrition for expectant mothers. She also initiated the program by planting a tree at the ground, emphasising the government’s commitment to promoting health and nutrition.

In her address, minister Neog stressed the critical role of nutrition in the growth and development of children, as well as the empowerment of women. She acknowledged that many women in Assam, especially in rural areas, suffer from malnutrition due to a lack of nutritious food. The minister affirmed the government’s responsibility to address this issue, outlining various schemes and programs aimed at improving nutrition and health outcomes.

Throughout the month, a series of events and programs will be organised to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition. These will include the distribution of nutritious food to vulnerable groups, training sessions on healthy cooking and eating habits, health check-ups, and counselling sessions. Minister Neog also emphasised the crucial role of Anganwadi workers in delivering essential nutrition and health services to women and children, assuring them of a forthcoming salary increase in recognition of their dedication.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to providing every necessary facility to women and children, striving to create a better future for the state. Principal secretary Mukesh Chandra Sahu, district commissioner Devashish Sharma, and other distinguished guests addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of nutrition and healthy living. The event also featured cultural activities, including exhibitions and puppet shows, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of nutrition.

Local MLA Ramakant Deuri, principal secretary of the Women and Child Development Department Mukesh Chandra Sahu, district commissioner Devashish Sharma, director Rahul Chandra Das, superintendent of police Hemant Kumar Das, and other officials from the government of Assam and district administration, along with women from various parts of the district, were present at the event.
