ASDMA marks GIS Day at Geo Wizard Unite 2023

GUWAHATI, Nov 29: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) commemorated GIS Day at Geo Wizard Unite 2023 under the theme “Mapping Assam for a Better Tomorrow”. The initiative aimed to unite GIS professionals, experts, and enthusiasts to explore and raise awareness about how the science of location intelligence contributes to understanding Assam’s landscapes, resources, and social structures in the context of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Disaster Preparedness.

The event included interactive workshops, presentations, discussions, quizzes, and national-level photography competitions. Geo Wizard Unite provided a unique platform to learn about the applications and benefits of GIS technology in Assam’s development. ASDMA encouraged active participation from across India in photography competitions, poster competitions, and an online quiz held on November 17, 2023, and November 21, 2023.

Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, IAS, chief executive officer of ASDMA, emphasised the significance of GIS Day. The sessions included “Geospatial Technology Application in Flood Management” by Dr Diganta Barma, senior scientist – sf, Nesac, and “Impact-based forecasting for the state of Assam” by Dr Sunit Das, Scientist-F (RMC-IMD). The CEO, ASDMA, announced the winners of the Geo Quiz Contest, Photography Contest, and GIS Poster Contest.

The winners of the Geo Quiz Contest were Sajida Shahnum (1st prize), Rimlee Bora (2nd prize), and Nandini Rajesh Durge (3rd prize). In the Photography Contest, the winners were Parag Jyoti Saikia Bordoloni (1st prize), Didarul Islam Mazumder Gour (2nd prize), and Grihith Khanna Dayal (3rd prize). The GIS Poster Contest winners were Ambarish (1st prize), Ambika Rabha (2nd prize), and Angkita Bhattacharyyam (3rd prize).

Alakananda Medhi, ACS, state project coordinator, ASDMA, extended gratitude to participants, winners, DDMAs, and keynote speakers for contributing to the success of GIS Day.
