SIVASAGAR, April 5: Attending a special felicitation programme at Amguri College, Basanta Goswami , president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha, sad that the Sabha is in an expansionist mood now, opening a primary unit in every college, and university in the state. The massive organisational network, like a ‘Chandratop’ holds together diverse ethnic and religious groups in the state.
The meeting, organised by Sivasagar Jila Sahitya Sabha and Amguri College jointly, was attended by Vice President Padum Rajkhowa, and secretary general of the Sabha Debajit Bora. Representatives of over 50 primary Sabha units felicitated the Sabha president Goswami on his maiden visit to the district after assumption of office. Jogesh Kishore Phukan, president, Sivasagar Jila Sahitya Sabha presided over the meeting and Dr Niharika Duwora, principal, Amguri College, delivered the welcome address.
Basanta Goswami reiterated that Asom Sahitya Sabha still occupies the highest seat of honour in the people’s heart and the present office bearers would do everything possible to extol it during the next ten months they have in hand.
He hoped that with the people’s unstinted support, it will be able to strengthen the financial health of the great institution. Goswami added that protecting Assamese language and culture is Sabha’s primary goal and it will always keep a vigilant eye on the matter. Fifty thousand Assamese youths will present Dr Bhopal Hazarika’s immortal song on his next birthday, he added.
Former president of Jila Sahitya Sabha Juga Gogoi, Dr Nirupoma Mahanta, and many other distinguished persons attended the function. Suspension of electricity supply to the sound system left the Sabha president’s speech unheard by the huge gathering.
