Guwahati, Dec 27: On December 27th, 2023, a significant development occurred within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam. The state BJP President, Bhabesh Kalita, took a decisive action against party indiscipline by expelling 16 members from the party. These individuals were ousted due to their decision to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) elections, which are scheduled for January 8, 2024.
The expelled members had chosen to stand against the officially nominated candidate of the BJP, thereby violating the party’s code of conduct. Among those expelled were Lalremthiem Tuolor, Rahul Naiding, Silvias Lalrotlounga Khozol, and several others who had planned to run independently in the DHAC polls.
This move by the Assam BJP President underscores the party’s commitment to maintaining unity and discipline among its ranks, especially in the lead-up to the crucial autonomous council elections. The DHAC is an important body formed under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, tasked with administering the Dima Hasao district and fostering the development of the hill people in the area.
The elections are expected to witness participation from a total of 1,41,124 voters across 280 polling stations. The results of these elections will be declared on January 12, 2024. This expulsion of members reflects the internal challenges political parties often face and the measures taken to address them ahead of significant electoral contests.
