Assam Budget 2025-26: BTR to become an Economic Corridor

KOKRAJHAR, March 10: The Government of Assam has announced plans to develop and uplift the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) as a key Economic Corridor under the Assam Budget 2025-26 fiscal year.

In the state budget being presented by the finance minister, Ajanta Neog on Monday, the Govt of Assam has earmarked ₹ 5,333 crores for BTR’s welfare, infrastructure and implementation of the BTR Peace Accord 2020, fostering sustainable peace and fueling progress like never before.

The state government earmarked Rs 4,160 crores for Bodoland Welfare Department of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) under various schemes and initiatives.

The state government has also allocated Rs 1,143 crores for Bodoland Council’s infrastructure developments and has sanctioned an additional Rs 30 crores to support over 4,000 families affected by past ethnic conflicts in BTR.

During the budget, the state government emphasised a significant initiative for the creation of the Bhutan-Bodoland-Bay of Bengal (B3 Corridor), which aims to enhance logistics connectivity between Bhutan and India, linking the region with Jogighopa and Phulbari.

The proposed corridor is expected to facilitate efficient trade and transportation, boosting economic activities across the region and strengthening the cross-border ties with Bhutan.

This strategic development is set to improve infrastructure, promote regional trade, and position BTR as a vital link in the broader economic landscape.

The budget also lays emphasis to step towards the implementation of all clauses of the historic BTR Peace Accord of 2020.

For the development of Bodo and Assamese language the budget mandates the teaching of Bodo or Assamese as compulsory subjects in the region.

The budget addressing BTR’s welfare and development includes rehabilitation of the former NDFB cadres, with over 6,600 former members receiving financial support, and more than 270 cases against them being withdrawn.

The region has received GI tags for 21 traditional Bodo products to promote Bodo heritage.

Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region has extended his gratitude and sincere thanks to the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and finance minister, Ajanta Neog for allocation of financial support to the BTC council to have a congenial welfare and development aspects in the region.

He stated that this allocated budget initiative will benefit BTR and its journey for peace and progress will get a robust boost in days to come.

He also mentioned that the Assam Budget 2025-26 earmarks ₹5,333 crores for BTR’s welfare, infrastructure and implementation of the BTR Peace Accord 2020, fostering sustainable peace and fueling progress like never before.

He has opined that the Assam Budget 2025-26 has been emphasising to reshape the Bodoland region into becoming an Economic Corridor of the state in the near future.
