He announced this at a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday. The decision to cancel all events on these dates is in response to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, which is scheduled to begin in Upper Assam on January 18.

CM Sarma explained that he cancelled his plans as a courteous gesture towards the Congress, to avoid clashing dates and to allow the district administrations to focus on the yatra. ‘Rahul Gandhi is coinciding our welfare dates.

“I have cancelled my Majuli programme and all programmes of Upper Assam scheduled for January 18 and 19, which were announced a month ago, to avoid clashing with Rahul Gandhi’s programmes,” CM Sarma said.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has proposed that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will start at the Interstate border Haluating at around 9 am, followed by a roadshow or public meeting at Amguri Town. The yatra is set to start from Nimatighat and end with a roadshow at Dhakuakhana on January 19, 2024.
