MANGALDAI, July 9: In a swift operation, Kharupetia police arrested two individuals involved in a fake gold smuggling attempt in Darrang district.
The accused, Bilal Hussain (26) and Noor Alam (24) of Balitika village in North Lakhimpur, allegedly tried to dupe two tourists from West Bengal—Babu Sona Ravidas and Milan Kotal—by attempting to sell them a counterfeit gold boat.
The victims, who were visiting the Kamakhya temple, were approached by the accused.
Noor Alam, known to one of the tourists, introduced them to an associate who displayed the fake item.
Alerted by a tip-off, police intervened before the deal was finalised, seizing the boat-shaped fake gold and the suspects’ mobile phones.
Police sources said the region has witnessed a spike in such scams, where fraudsters often use boat-shaped objects to con buyers.
Despite previous arrests, these rackets continue to emerge. Kharupetia police have intensified their crackdown on such illegal activities and urged the public to remain cautious.
