GUWAHATI, Aug 14: The flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement, with the number of affected individuals across seven districts decreasing to 65,500, according to an official bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Tragically, two more lives were claimed by the floods in Chariduar of Sonitpur district, bringing the death toll from this year’s flood to 14.
While over 65,600 people are still grappling with the aftermath of the flood in districts including Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Sivasagar, and Sonitpur, this is a notable decrease from the previous count of more than 75,200 people across the same districts.
Among the affected districts, Dhemaji remains the hardest hit with over 31,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with more than 29,300, and Chirang with around 2,200.
The administration is operating seven relief camps in Sivasagar, providing shelter to 1,329 people, and has set up 20 relief distribution centers in six districts. Currently, 316 villages are submerged, and approximately 5,743.09 hectares of crop areas have suffered damage throughout the state.
The floodwaters have also caused significant erosion in Kamrup, Kokrajhar, and Sonitpur districts. Infrastructure such as embankments, roads, bridges, and more have been adversely affected in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Chirang, Sonitpur, Barpeta, and Dhemaji.
The Brahmaputra river continues to flow above the danger mark at Dhubri, Tezpur, and Neamatighat. The water levels of its tributaries, such as Beki at Road Bridge and Disang at Nanglamuraghat, are also above the danger mark.
The flood’s impact extends to domestic animals as well, with nearly 23,000 animals being affected across the state. Despite the challenges posed by the flood, the situation seems to be gradually improving.
