DIPHU, July 12: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya concluded his two-day visit to Karbi Anglong on Friday, during which he interacted with beneficiaries of various government schemes, inspected infrastructure projects, and visited several key central and state government establishments.
As part of the itinerary, the Governor visited the Regional Coffee Research Station (RCRS) located at 5th Mile along the Diphu-Manja Road.
During his visit to the station, he took stock of the coffee garden maintained by the RCRS, inquired about its production output, ongoing training programmes, and the overall economic prospects of coffee cultivation in the region.
The Deputy Director (Research) of RCRS, Dr Atiqur Rahman Bora, briefed the Governor on the research and training activities being undertaken by the Coffee Board in the Northeastern Region.
He also outlined the coffee development initiatives currently in progress under the board’s mandate.
The Governor appreciated the Coffee Board’s role in promoting sustainable development in the region and urged greater focus on research, marketing, and value addition.
He emphasised the need to develop Karbi Anglong coffee as a distinct and high-value brand, stating that it deserves both national and international recognition similar to Assam tea.
Dr Bora noted that this was the first time a sitting Governor had visited the RCRS since its establishment in 1985.
He expressed confidence that the visit would bring much-needed visibility to the region’s coffee sector and help highlight its potential in premium markets. Bora said the Governor’s message regarding branding and marketing would be a strong motivator for stakeholders across the value chain.
Governor Acharya was accompanied during the visit by Executive Members of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) D. Uphing Maslai and Tilutoma Hasnu, MLAs Bidyasing Engleng and Rupsing Teron, District Commissioner Nerola Phangchopi, and several other departmental officials.
