MORIGAON, Dec 27: The district-level matches of the 2023-24 Assam Khel Maharan started on Wednesday in Morigaon, marking the beginning of a sports extravaganza. The inaugural ceremony took place at Morigaon Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School grounds. District commissioner Devashish Sharma participated in the event, expressing the belief that the government’s Khel Maharan program would propel athletes to national and international success.
The district-level program includes athletics events such as 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m, along with volleyball. The competitions for football, kabaddi, and kho-kho are scheduled for December 28. Athletes are competing in four age categories: Under 19 (male), under 19 (female), over 19 (male), and over 19 (female). The games have progressed from gram panchayat, municipal, and assembly constituency levels, with the finals heading to the state level.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar) Hriday Kumar Das and finance and accounts officer Habiba Ullah Konwar, along with district sports officer Chandan Talukdar, distributed prizes to the players at the end of the tournament. The district level matches aim to showcase local talent and prepare athletes for higher-level competitions.
