Khel Maharan begins in Morigaon

MORIGAON, Nov 1: Assam Khel Maharan 2023-24 began in Morigaon on Wednesday. The games that
have been organized with an aim to encouraging sportsmanship among the youths of the state, will end
on November 15.
Accordingly, various sports events will be held in the Kapili, Dalanghat , Mayang , Bhurbandha,
Laharighat and Moirabari development zones of the district as part of the Khel Maharan. The Assam
Khel Maharan will feature five sports categories namely athletics (100m, 200m, 400m and 800m),
football, kabaddi, volleyball and kho-kho.
The competitors are divided into four categories are namely, under 19 (male), under 19 (female), over
19 (male) and over 19 (female). The games will be held at several levels from grassroots to the state
level. The games will be held at the gram panchayat, municipal, assembly constituency and district
levels. The winners will finally compete for the trophy at the state level.

The inaugural session of the Khel Maharan was held at Samar Dalani in Biswanath Chariali district on
Wednesday. The fortnight long sports event of Dakhin Nagsankar GP, which also comes under Sootea
development block, has been organized at the playground of the Dakhin Nagsankar High School.

The inaugural session began with hoisting of the flag by Parbati Sarma, chairman of Dakhin Nagsankar
GP level Khel Maharan committee followed by lighting of the lamp by Ballav Chapagain, headmaster of
the school. Hitesh Barua, ZPC member inaugurated the sports event. The organizers also felicitated two
senior sports persons of the greater South Nagsankar area, Homnath Dhakal and Khagen Bhuyan on the
occasion. The two veteran sports persons also lighted torches. Baneswar Bora, local sports organizer and
sportsman was also felicitated by the Khel Maharan committee. The event was attended by registered
players, teachers, dignitaries and the general public.
The state government has initiated the Khel Maharan programme to provide a platform to budding
sportsmen in villages, blocks and municipal areas to display their sporting skills.
The mega sports event will be held in gaon panchayat, village council development committees (VCDC),
municipal areas from November 1 to 15. After the primary level, the next level will be held in the
constituency level from November 27 to December 11 and then in the district level from December 19
to 23. The state level competitions will be held from January 6 to 10 next year.
