MORIGAON, Sept 22: A preparatory meeting was convened on Friday at the District Commissioner’s Office in Morigaon to ensure the successful organisation of the Assam Khel Maharan 2023-24, scheduled to be held statewide from November 1. Chaired by district commissioner Devashish Sharma, who also serves as the chairman of the Morigaon District Level Committee for Khel Maharan, the meeting focused on determining sports competition venues.
The tournament will take place at various locations, including the Charaibahi Ancholik Sports’ Association ground, Kshirod Barua Stadium, and Bhurbandha Regional Sports Association ground for Morigaon constituency. Additional venues include the Kushtali Ground, Nij Gerua Ground, and Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex. Matches will also be held at Jagi Higher Secondary School ground, Na-Khola Regional Ground, and Ahatguri Ground. District-level competitions are set to unfold at Kshirod Barua Stadium and Morigaon Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School.
The district commissioner emphasised that this extensive sports program serves as an excellent platform to discover and nurture talented athletes at the grassroots level, potentially elevating them to national and international competition. He encouraged aspiring players in the district to register on the Khel Maharan portal (http://dsywassam.com/khel) to participate in the tournament. The meeting saw the presence of Morigaon Municipality mayor Yogesh Tamuli, additional superintendent of police Dhruvajyoti Nath, district sports officer Chandan Talukdar, and committee members from district and assembly constituency levels.
Organised by the government of Assam, the Assam Khel Maharan aims to promote sports talent from the grassroots and hone their skills. The tournament includes competitions in five sports categories: athletics (100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m), football, kabaddi, volleyball, and kho-kho. Participants are categorised by age, spanning Under 19 (male and female) and Over 19 (male and female) divisions. The event progresses from gram panchayat and municipal levels to assembly constituency and district levels, culminating in state-level finals.
