Assam Police issues notice to Congress leaders for route violations

JORHAT, Jan 25: The Assam Police on Thursday initiated action against Congress leaders, including Bhupen Kumar Borah, for their alleged involvement in deviating from the permitted route and causing disruptions during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Jorhat town.

In this regard, a notice under section 41 (A) CrPc has been sent to Bhupen Kumar Borah, directing him to appear before the Jorhat Police on January 31, 2024, at 11 AM.

“The investigation of Jorhat PS Case No. 20/2024 U/S-120(13)/115(11)/143/147/188/283/323/353 IPC R/W Sec. 3 of PDPP Act…revealed reasonable grounds to question you. Hence, you are directed to appear before the Investigating Officer on 31/01/2024 at Jorhat PS at 11 AM,” reads the notice to Bhupen Borah.

The police have also invoked sections 120(B), 115(II), 143, 147, 188, 283, 323, 353, and Section 3 of the PDPP Act in this regard.

Notices have also been issued to Jorhat District Congress president Putul Borgohain and general secretary Abhijit Phukan to appear before the investigating officer (I/O) Hirok Jyoti Changmai on January 21.

However, Phukan, citing being out of station, plans to appear on January 29 and expressed concerns about the alleged harassment by the government. On the other hand, Borgohain has sought time.

APCC working president Rana Goswami has also received a notice to appear before the police on January 31.

It is worth mentioning that on January 18, the yatra deviated from the approved path, resulting in chaos, confrontations with law enforcement, and alleged property damage.
