DIPHU, Jan 17: The Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) has written to the Prime Minister of India asking for the implementation of Autonomous State in Assam under the Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India.

The JACAS said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in April 1995 with the Autonomous State Demand Committee; Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed in November 25, 2011 with the United Peoples Democratic Solidarity and MoS on September 4, 2021 with six rebel groups have not fulfilled the demand of Autonomous State.

The MoS signed on September 4, 2021 has been intended to destroy the spirit and purpose of the Sixth Schedule and to undermine the constitutional safeguards provided to protect the rights, interests and identities of the hill tribes people of Karbi Anglong.

The demand for an Autonomous State should be taken into consideration, said JACAS.
