Baokhungri Festival begins atop Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 12:  The 12th edition of the Baokhungri Festival has been kicked off on Saturday with vibrant traditional festive activities at the Baokhungri Hill along the Harinaguri in Kokrajhar district that withessesd a huge gathering.

The mega event was organised by the Tourism Department of government of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

The three-day festival is a celebration of Bodo culture, spirituality, and age-old traditions which has been celebrating every year on the eve of the newyear i.e. last day of the Choitra month to welcome the Baisak month or Rongjali Bwisagu/Rongali Bihu.

This festival is held in sync with the auspicious Sankranti, the festival marks a significant spiritual journey as thousands of devotees are expected to trek up the Baukhungri Hill on April 14 to seek blessings from Lord Bwrai Bathou, praying for good health and the fulfillment of their wishes.

The festival was inaugurated by Dharma Narayan Das, Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, who opened the main entrance, setting the tone for a cultural extravaganza.

The event features a line-up of traditional Bodo sports like Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling), Ghila Gelenai, Dongfang Bukhunai, and Daobo Athing, alongside cycling races and indigenous games that highlighted the community’s vibrant athletic heritage.

Visitors to the festival are treated to a range of traditional Bodo delicacies available at numerous food stalls, while cultural performances from multiple ethnic groups added color and unity to the celebrations, showcasing Bodoland’s cultural diversity.

The opening day saw participation of several prominent leaders and dignitaries including BTC executive members, Dabaisa Boro, Ranjit Basumatary, Dhanajay Basumatary, Member of Parliament Rwngwra Narzary, and MLA Lawrence Islary.

More than just a cultural event, the Baokhungri Festival is a vital platform for preserving indigenous traditions, fostering community unity, and promoting tourism across the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The sacred trek on Sankranti remains the spiritual heart of the festival, drawing pilgrims from across Assam and beyond.

The members of the organising committee of the festival and local citizens are seen busy while discharging their duties to meet a smooth successful of the festival in a grand manner.

“I’m thrilled to join the 12th Baokhungri Festival 2025. Let’s celebrate nature, culture, and unity together. Trek the iconic Baokhungri Hills, soak in our rich traditions, and revel in community spirit. See you at the summit,” said BTC executive member Ranjit Basumatary.
