Bike Lifter Dies In Police Custody At Gaurisagar

GAURISAGAR, Sept 28: Sensation prevailed at Gaurisagar following the death of an youth while in Police custody in Gaurisagar PS on Wednesday.

According to sources, police recovered a pulsar motorbike bearing registration no AS-04-H-4830 of Putul Das which was stolen by some unknown miscreant from the Gaurisagar Weekly Market. Based on CCTV footage a team of Gaurisagar Police led by officer in charge Satyajit Borthakur picked up one Babu Guwala S/o Jogen Guwala from his residence. During interrogation, Babu reported to have confessed his crime. The Police told media that Babu fled from police custody while he accompanied the police team to recover the stolen bike from a place and jumped into the Gaurisagar Pukhuri close to the police station. Though the police recovered his body and rushed to Sibsagar Civil Hospital for admitting him, the doctor declared him dead.

As the news of his death spread, the family members, local people gheraod Gaurisagar Police Station. Family members alleged it as a planned murder and demanded judicial enquiry.

They also demanded to publish CCTV footage. Family members denied to receive dead body. Police administration deployed police and paramilitary forces in the area. Additional SP Dr Devajit Nath, DSP Daisy Gogoi, Jugal Kishore Kalita, O/c Sivasagar Sadar Police Station visited Gaurisagar PS.

Local people blocked NH-37 for a while demanding the judiciary enquiry and to punish guilty police officer. Sivasagar police administration immediately suspended Satyajit Borthakur, O/c of the Gaurisagar PS. In the evening after post mortem the body of Babu Guwala was handed over to his family.
