JORHAT, July 10: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday inspected the ongoing ambitious project for beautification of Lachit Borphukan Maidam at Gohaingaon, Meleng, on the eastern outskirts here.
Sarma, after taking stock of the work progress, told newspersons at the site that 12 percent of the work had been completed.
Stating that 60 percent of the enormous statue of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan had been completed in a studio at Noida, the chief minister said that the bronze statue, a major component of the project, is expected to be installed by January next.
Sarma said that the other components of the project like a museum, an auditorium and other beautification works are expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
He was accompanied by minister of Cultural Affairs, Industries and Commerce and Public Enterprise Bimal Borah, Jorhat MP, Topon Kumar Gogoi, Rajya Sabha members – Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Pabitra Margherita, MLAs of Jorhat, Teok, Mariani, Naharkatia and officials of Jorhat district administration and PWD.
It may be mentioned here that the project is coming up at 49 bighas two kathas 17 lechas plot of land which includes the existing maidam area spread over five bighas.
The foundation-stone of the project was laid by the then President Ram Nath Kovind virtually from Guwahati on February 25 this year while launching the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Borphukan.
