KOKRAJHAR, Feb 11: The BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary on Wednesday laid the foundation stones of several major infrastructure projects under the Special Development Package (SDP) scheme in Kokrajhar district aimed at strengthening the sports, cultural and handloom sectors while generating employment and promoting youth development in the region.
The foundation stone was laid for the Development of DASA Stadium at Dotma at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. The project will include a standard football ground, a 400-metre athletic track, sprinkler and irrigation systems, a pavilion with VIP dais, spectator galleries, high mast floodlighting, electrification and other essential infrastructure with a seating capacity of 1,500 spectators.
The foundation stone was also laid for the Production and Marketing Centre for Handloom and Textile Products at Haltugaon in Kokrajhar district at an estimated cost of Rs 24.31 crore over an area of 50 bigha. The centre will focus on the production of high-demand products such as Eri silk sarees, mekhela chador, dokhona and Eri stoles, aiming to revitalise the handloom and textile sectors, preserve traditional craftsmanship, empower local artisans and promote sustainable livelihoods. The project is expected to generate employment for around 650 persons, including 240 direct and 500 indirect jobs and will include production units, exhibition and workshop spaces, marketing offices, administrative blocks and other common facilities.
In addition, the foundation stone was laid for the Construction of Audience Gallery for Volleyball and Football venue at KDSA, Kokrajhar, at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore. The project aims to strengthen sports infrastructure in the district, promote football and athletics, facilitate the conduct of district and state-level sporting events and encourage greater youth participation and structured talent development. The project includes the construction of separate spectator galleries for volleyball and football, a VIP gallery for football, among other works.
Further, the foundation stone was laid for the Construction of Dr Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Multi-Purpose Cultural Auditorium Hall at Kokrajhar, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. The project aims to promote art, culture, music and education while honoring the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The proposed complex will include a 1,500-seat auditorium, museum, audio-visual library, music workshop, life-size statue and other facilities.
Addressing the media during the programmes, the BTC Chief spoke about the special Assembly Session held on Wednesday, where the crucial bill on provincialisation of venture schools and colleges in the BTC area was passed, ensuring better and more stable educational facilities for the youth. He said, “With the passage of this bill, long-pending issues related to teaching staff and institutional development from LP schools to junior colleges would now be resolved.” He also thanked the opposition MCLAs for extending their support, noting it as a major step in the education sector.
EM Derhasat Basumatary and Prakash Basumatary, MCLAs, Additional Principal Secretary Pranjit Wary and officials of the concerned departments were also present on the occasion.
