The Catholic Church at Khalihamari is one of the oldest churches of the Northeast which was constructed in 1931 and has been exquisitely decorated with colourful flickering lights, stars and illuminated Christmas trees.

Various churches in the town have been buzzing with Christmas preparation – Catholic Church at Khalihamari, Baptist Church at Jail Road, Church of Jesus Christ at Kadamoni, Presbyterian Church of India at Paltan Bazar, Church of North India at South Khalihamari.

A strikingly elegant tableau of Jesus Christ adorns the inside of the cathedral along with other prettily decorated cribs symbolising the birth of Jesus.

An assistant Parish priest Gabriel Kujur stated that Christmas is an occasion to pray for harmony and goodwill, a time for love and forgiveness and a time to celebrate and rejoice. People of all faith congregate here on Christmas.

“Over 3,000 Christians are expected to gather for the midnight mass on Tuesday. The church choir group will also present Christmas carols on the occasion,” Kujur said.
