DIPHU, Dec. 25: Christmas was celebrated with religious fervour and joy by people of Karbi Anglong. People of the Christian community celebrated the occasion by attending Christmas service and organizing several programmes across the district.
On Christmas Eve people could be seen attending the midnight mass and and sitting around bonfire and singing and merry-making. People could be heard singing carols in churches across Diphu.
Christmas commemorates the birth of Lord Jesus Christ at Bethlehem town in Jerusalem. It also symbolises the spirit of joy, love and giving.
Churches and the homes of people in Diphu town were adorned with Christmas bells, decorative lights and stars. People could be seen visiting wishing each other dressed in their best attire and participating in the Christmas service.
At Rongchingdon Baptist Church the Christmas service started at 11 am. The Church hall was packed as a large number of people, including children in large numbers participated in the morning mass. Pastor Harun Rongpi was the chairman of the service. The theme was, ‘I bring to you good news…’ Luke 2:10.
Mission Board chairman, Ronsing Millik, the appointed speaker in his Christmas message gave a brief account of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. He explained the meaning and purpose of Christmas and said Christ was born to save humanity from sin.
Millik reminded the faithful that the real meaning of Christmas is to allow Christ to be born in our hearts. It should not be an outer preparation by going for new clothes, decorating the homes and feasting, but the heart and mind should be clean to receive Christ.
Sunday School children presented bible memory verses on the birth of Christ. They also presented dances with gospel songs. The women’s group also presented a Christmas chorus.
Earlier, bible reading was taken up by the secretary, the women’s department, Jacolyn Taropi. The service ended with a mass prayer led by Jemson Rongpi.
After the service ended men and women, youth and children wished each other Merry Christmas. The celebration ended with a Christmas feast, which attended by all present. In the evening the youth department organised a ‘Gift Exchange Programme’ which was attended by Sunday School children and Church members.
