Conference on environment, climate change, and sustainability held at Dhing College

Nagaon, July 2: Dhing College, in collaboration with Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, organised a week-long multidisciplinary international conference on environment, climate change, and sustainability. The conference took place at the college auditorium from June 20, attracting over 150 delegates, including teachers, students, NGOs, and local media personnel, in a hybrid mode.

The conference aimed to delve into the scientific concepts underlying modern biotechnologies and explore their potential for developing products and processes such as biofuels, novel bioactive compounds, and waste conversion technologies. Additionally, it examined the bioethical, socio-economic, and regulatory aspects of environmental sustainability, emphasising the collective responsibility of individuals in environmental protection.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika, the principal of Dhing College, and featured Professor HP Sarma, former rector of the department of Environmental Science at Gauhati University, as the chief guest. Dr SK Sarma from the department of Botany at Gauhati University delivered the keynote address. Dr Hazarika emphasised the significance of environmental conservation in his inaugural speech, while Professor SK Sarma stressed the importance of environmental protection and economic sustainability.

In the technical session, Padmashree Jadav Payeng, popularly known as the ‘Forest Man of India’, shared his experiences in establishing the manmade ‘Molai Forest’. The conference also included virtual presentations by Claudia Laricchia, head of social mission and external relations at the Future Food Institute in Italy, who discussed the relationship between food and climate change. Professor Hiranya Kr Nath from the department of Economics and International Business at Sam Huston State University, USA, joined virtually to speak about environmental awareness and actions. Furthermore, Professor Dr Saurabh Saha and Dr Ajit Devnath from Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya addressed the impact of climate change on agriculture in the Eastern Himalayan region of India and emerging environmental health issues, specifically waste management.

The conference provided a platform for fruitful discussions and exchange of knowledge on crucial topics related to the environment, climate change, and sustainability.
