Notably, Borthakur the Mahila Congress president in the state contested polls from Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency in the last general elections, although she lost to the BJP candidate Bijuli Kalita Medhi.
“How a contesting poll candidate can be involved in anti-party activities. I could not understand it,” she said.
The woman leader also asserted that she has been doing politics with utmost dedication to the Congress party and she will continue to do so, adding, “I have not received any show cause notice as of now.”
Meanwhile, the state Congress chief Bhupen Borah said that the whole thing is an internal matter of the party and it should not be made public.
“I was not in Assam for the last six days and I returned back today. In the meantime, I have spoken to other senior leaders and everybody asserted that this show-cause not should not have been made public,” he added.
Borah also took a dig at chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said, “Unlike the BJP in Assam, Congress believes in maintaining democracy in the party.”
To recall, the Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) of Congress in Assam has issued show-cause notices to five senior party leaders, including three current MLAs, for alleged involvement in “anti-party activities” during this year’s Lok Sabha polls. The five leaders were given seven days’ time to respond to the show cause notice.
Three legislators—Abdur Rashid Mondol, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Bharat Chandra Narah, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Barthakur, and Hailakandi District Congress Committee president Samsuddin Barlaskar were issued show-cause notices.
The accusations include utilising social media platforms improperly to harm the party’s reputation and making public remarks that went against party doctrine and leadership.
The show cause notice mentioned, “The committee physically verified the ground realities in districts such as South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, and Kamrup (Rural) to identify those involved in anti-party activities during the elections. These actions are considered a breach of party discipline.”
