MANGALDAI, July 9: The panchayat formation process in Dalgaon Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) turned violent on Wednesday when newly elected Chairman Khurshid Alam, backed by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), was allegedly assaulted by Congress supporters at Kawadanga Raja Hawli village panchayat.
Alam secured the chairmanship with six votes, defeating the Congress-backed candidate who received four votes in a democratic election among ward members.
Following the announcement of results, Congress supporters allegedly attacked Alam, kicking and punching him and leaving him seriously injured.
Police personnel present at the scene intervened and rescued Alam, who was then rushed to a nearby hospital.
Before his admission, Alam condemned the attack, stating that he was elected through a transparent democratic process and accused some Congress supporters of resorting to violence out of frustration.
Alam has urged the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to take stringent action against those involved, describing them as “anti-social elements.”
Authorities have not yet issued a statement on the incident, which highlights the escalating tension in the panchayat formation process in Dalgaon LAC.
