GUWAHATI, Aug 25: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria presided over the inaugural meeting of the consultative group established for Higher Education at Raj Bhavan on Friday.
The consultative group has been established to aid the Governor’s Secretariat in the effective implementation of NEP 2020. The group will convene at least once a month to review the progress of NEP 2020 implementation in Assam and provide recommendations for its better execution. The group’s responsibilities include addressing crucial issues pertaining to higher education and offering strategies for enhancing the state’s higher education landscape. Additionally, it will analyze in-depth and propose actionable measures to ensure the smooth and efficient execution of NEP 2020 provisions. Members will also undertake field visits to educational institutions within and outside Assam.
During the meeting, the Governor emphasized that in the swiftly evolving educational landscape, especially with the introduction of NEP 2020, concerted efforts are required to enable educational institutions to impart knowledge that benefits society. He stated, “Our country has a youth-dominated population, and we must provide education that equips our youth for the challenges of the digital era.”
The Governor also highlighted that the implementation of NEP comes with a greater responsibility for stakeholders to make Assam a frontrunner in education. He expressed gratitude to all participants for their involvement in the consultative group.
The consultative group was formed with members including advisor education Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, advisor to the chancellor’s Secretariat Dr Mihir K. Chaudhuri, additional chief secretary of higher education Biswaranjan Samal as the convenor, commissioner & secretary to the Governor of Assam S S Meenakshi Sundaram, executive director of AIIMS, Guwahati Prof Ashok Puranik, officiating director of IIT Guwahati Prof Parameswar K. Iyer, VCs of Tezpur University, Cotton University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agricultural University, Women’s University, The Assam Royal Global University, former VC of The Assam Don Bosco University Fr (Dr) Stephen Mavely, secretary of higher education Narayan Konwar, secretary to the Governor of Assam Swapna Dutta Deka, secretary of the Department of Higher Education Banashree Nath, additional secretary of higher education Kabita Deka, and principal of Arya Vidyapeeth College Dr Pradip Kr Bhattacharyya.
