GUWAHATI, July 1: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday chaired a comprehensive meeting at Raj Bhavan with directors and heads of higher education institutions to assess their readiness for the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
During the meeting, Governor Kataria emphasised the crucial importance of effectively implementing the NEP 2020. He stressed the need for meticulous planning and coordination among all stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of the policy. The Governor expressed satisfaction with the state’s progress in various areas, including student-teacher ratios and male-female literacy ratios, which bode well for the overall improvement of education in Assam.
Governor Kataria recognised the knowledge and experience possessed by the directors and vice-chancellors (VCs) present at the meeting. He urged them to utilise their expertise to enhance the quality of education and align the provisions of the new education policy with the specific needs of the state. He stated, “We should learn from our experiences and strive to effectively implement the NEP 2020, ensuring that our younger generation reaps its maximum benefits.” Considering the diverse requirements of today’s society and the belief that a multidisciplinary approach to education can address these needs, the Governor urged the directors and VCs to fully implement the provisions of the NEP and realize its multidisciplinary vision as outlined in the policy.
During the meeting, presentations were made by esteemed individuals such as Prof Parameshwar K Iyer, director of IIT-G, Gautam Baruah, director of IIIT-G, Prof V.K. Ahuja, VC of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, S.Y. Shirali, principal director and head of CIPET Guwahati, Dr U.S.N. Murty, director of NIPER, Dr Hemanta Kumar Kalita, director (i/c) of the Central Institute of Technology in Kokrajhar, Dr Y. Jayanta Singh, executive director of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology in Guwahati, Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah, VC of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, and Shubhash Chandra Das, VC of Assam Skill University in Mangaldai. Each presenter shared their respective action plans for the effective implementation of the NEP 2020.
The meeting was attended by various dignitaries including Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, advisor education, government of Assam, Prof M.K. Choudhury, advisor to the Chancellor’s Secretariat, Biswaranjan Samal, additional chief secretary higher education, Narayan Konwar, secretary higher education, Kuntal Sharma Pathak, secretary judicial department, S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, commissioner and secretary to the Governor, and Swapna Dutta Deka, secretary to the Governor, along with other senior government officials.
