GUWAHATI, June 14: Lion Deepak Mittal has been elected unopposed as the president of the Lions Club of Gauhati for the Lionistic year 2026-27, ending what could have been the first contested presidential election in the club’s 57-year history.
According to club sources, Lion Ajay Poddar withdrew his candidature a day before the scheduled election.
Following the withdrawal, Election Officer Lion Bijay Harlalka informed Club President Lion Rajesh Hansaria, after which Mittal was declared elected unopposed.
A social worker based in Guwahati, Mittal was born in Shillong in 1972 and has been serving on the club’s board since 2011.
Over the years, he has been associated with several service-oriented initiatives, including the establishment of a Rs 1 crore corpus fund for the Gauhati Lions Eye Hospital along with Lions D.P. Bajaj, Manoj Bhajanka and Surendra Jain.
He also played a key role in launching the “Bag of Hope” food grain distribution project, which has provided assistance to more than 1,500 underprivileged families.
Apart from his involvement with the Lions Club, Mittal serves as an executive member of Shree Gauhati Gausala and Marwari Sammelan, Guwahati Sakha.
Speaking about his priorities, Mittal said he would focus on strengthening the club’s healthcare initiatives and work towards establishing a larger eye hospital, as well as dialysis and blood bank facilities, by 2030.
With a membership strength of more than 308, the Lions Club of Gauhati is among the largest clubs in Lions District 322G. Mittal will formally assume office on July 1.
Members of the club expressed confidence that his leadership would further strengthen the organisation’s long-standing commitment to community service and social welfare.
