Dr Birendra Kumar Saikia, a renowned scientist passes away

JORHAT, Feb 19: Dr Birendra Kumar Saikia, a retired scientist and former deputy director of CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, who was also a noted sportsman, passed away at his Kamarbandha Road residence here on Monday due to old age ailments. He was 93 years old.

Saikia is survived by his wife Pranati Saikia, a retired vice-principal of Jagannath Barooah College (Autonomous), Jorhat, three daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and a large number of relatives.

Saikia was the state champion of table-tennis in 1952 and had represented Assam several times at the national level. He was also the president of the Jorhat Bridge Association for three terms.

Born to tea planter Kanaknath Dutta Saikia and Niradabala Saikia, Birendra Kumar Saikia was the eldest son and the elder brother of Uday Shankar Saikia and Raktim Saikia. His demise has been widely mourned by all who knew him.
