Guwahati, April 23: A total of 1,351 candidates from 12 states and union territories will contest in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 7, as per the Election Commission’s Tuesday announcement.
Assam will see 47 candidates compete for four Lok Sabha seats, including the capital Guwahati. Barpeta has the maximum number of candidates at 14, followed by Dhubri with 13, Kokrajhar with 12 and Guwahati with eight. Five candidates withdrew their nominations on the final day. In Guwahati, BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi will run against Congress’ Mira Borthakur Goswami.
The Dhubri seat will see a three-way contest between AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Congress’ Rakibul Hussain and AGP candidate Zaved Islam. Barpeta is also likely to witness a triangular fight between CPI(M) candidate Manoranjan Talukdar, AGP’s Phasi Bhusan Choudhury and Congress’ Deep Bayan.
In Kokrajhar, UPPL’s Jayanta Basumatary, Congress’ Garjen Mushahary and BPF’s Kampa Borgoyary will compete. The deadline for candidature withdrawal was April 22. Out of 2,963 nominations for 95 seats, 1,563 were deemed valid after scrutiny.
Gujarat had the highest number of nomination forms at 658 across 26 constituencies, followed by Maharashtra with 519 nominations for 11 seats, the EC reported.
