Fake currency racket busted in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, Aug 29: A fake currency racket was dismantled by the Guwahati police in Assam on Tuesday, leading to the confiscation of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) with a face value of Rs 10 lakh.

The operation took place near Gorchuk police station in Guwahati.

Two individuals, Sariful Islam and Sajadul Islam, both residents of Lakhimpur district in Assam, were arrested by the Guwahati police for possessing counterfeit currency. The arrested suspects were presented before the court, with the police continuing their investigation into the matter.

“A WGPD team from Gorchuk PS arrested 2 – Md Sariful Islam & Sajadul Islam, both from Bihpuria – and recovered FICN 10 lakhs from their possession. Legal action initiated,” the Guwahati police stated in a post on X, previously twitter.

Earlier, on August 22, a Special Task Force (STF) unit of the Assam Police apprehended three alleged fake currency smugglers in the Krishnai area of Goalpara district. The authorities seized 29 bundles of FICN in Rs 500 denomination, with a total face value of Rs 14.5 lakh.

Counterfeit currency smuggling has been a recurring issue in Assam, leading to multiple arrests in various parts of the state. The circulation of fake currency notes has detrimental effects on the national economy, and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to curb such illegal activities.
