TEZPUR, July 2: The flood caused by the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries, following incessant rain over the last few days, has inundated many areas in Sonitpur district. The flood situation remains grim in several areas, particularly in Tezpur LAC such as Tol-Gereki, Bishnu Rabha Samadhi Kshetra, Hanuman Mandir, and Bhairabi Mandir areas. Many families in these areas have sought shelter at Lutharian School campus, while others have moved to higher ground along with their livestock.
Apart from Tezpur, numerous villages under Chariduar, Dhekiajuli, Thelamara, and Nadwar revenue circles in Sonitpur district have also been severely affected by the floods. District commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra highlighted that areas including No 1 Kacharigaon TE, Kholihamari, Dighaligaon, parts of Dhekiajuli town, Bargain Chapori, Katonigaon, Kamarchuburi, Ruhinibeel, Khagorijan under Dhekiajuli Revenue Circle, and others like Burhachapori, Bhumuraguri, Rajgarh, Rajbharal, Bhoojkhwa, Tengabasti, Koroioni Nepali, Garsinga Bihiagaon, Kolibarichuk, and more under Tezpur revenue circle have been flooded.
He stated, “4631 persons in Chariduar Circle, 237 persons in Dhekiajuli revenue circle, 863 persons in Thelamara revenue circle, and 123 persons in Naduar revenue circle have been affected. To provide relief, a total of 8 relief camps have been set up, offering essential supplies to those affected.”
Accompanied by local MLA Prithiraj Rabha, district commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra has been visiting the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand. Mishra also reported that floodwaters have breached a significant portion of a PWD road in the Batomari Convention Center area, isolating local residents from the outside world.
In tragic incidents, two individuals, Singhabir Chetry (60) from Burhachapori and Nomal Das from Tezpur Tol-Kolibari area, drowned in the Brahmaputra floodwaters. Additionally, seven wild elephants were reported drowned while trying to cross from Burha Chapori to the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River, currently seeking shelter in the Tol Kolibari area.
After surveying the flood-affected areas, MLA Prithiraj Rabha briefed the media, stating that urgent measures have been initiated to relocate affected individuals to safe locations and provide necessary relief. “I have been closely monitoring the situation, and together with the district administration, we are taking every possible step to address this crisis,” Rabha assured.
