DIBRUGARH, Apr 28: Former Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) Dibrugarh district president Parag Jyoti Baruah, along with hundreds of his supporters, joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Monday in Dibrugarh.
AGP president and state agriculture minister Atul Bora, along with health minister Keshab Mahanta, was present and welcomed Baruah and his supporters into the AGP.
Ahead of the Assam Panchayat elections, the joining of Parag Jyoti Baruah and his supporters is seen as a major setback for the AJP.
Speaking to reporters, Atul Bora said that the AGP is in alliance with the BJP for the upcoming panchayat elections and is receiving a good response.
“The joining of Parag Jyoti Baruah is a big boost for the party. AGP is a regional party born out of struggle. It has faced many hardships and sacrifices in its early days. Our dedicated members have worked tirelessly to strengthen regionalism. Our main objective is to uphold and promote regionalism, and for that, we need good and dedicated people. We are confident that the joining of Parag Jyoti Baruah will strengthen the AGP in the Dibrugarh district,” Bora added.
Bora further said that the position of the Congress and other opposition parties is weak and that they are not active in the field, adding, “The Congress is now at zero and soon will become a big zero in the upcoming elections.”
Health Minister Keshab Mahanta also welcomed the development, expressing hope that it would further strengthen regionalism.
“Under the leadership of Parag Jyoti Baruah, more than 200 people have joined the AGP. This is good news for the party, and we are hopeful that the new members will work hard to promote regionalism,” Mahanta said.
Chabua MLA Punakon Baruah, AGP general secretary Sunil Rajkonwar, and others were also present at the joining programme.
