JAGIROAD, May 26: Residents of Jagiroad town are facing severe inconvenience due to the pervasive and unpleasant smell emanating from the town’s dry fish market. The strong odour has engulfed the central areas of this fast-growing town, raising health and hygiene concerns among locals.
Reportedly, the dry fish market — regarded as Asia’s largest — has been set up in an unscientific manner along the busy Railway Station Road and its surrounding areas. The market’s location, along with the indiscriminate parking of large trucks from states such as Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, has led to frequent congestion and has disrupted access to key public facilities.
Commuters and visitors to the railway station are particularly affected, as are those accessing essential services like the local SBI branch, BSNL office, Post Office, and Nakhola High School.
Local citizens have also raised concerns over the unhygienic conditions created by the presence of these trucks, which often block the road. The situation is especially concerning in light of the increased prominence of the Jagiroad Railway Station, following the establishment of Tata’s Semiconductor project in the region — a development that has elevated the town’s importance within Morigaon district.
Residents are now urging the district administration and the state government to take immediate steps to relocate the dry fish market to a more suitable location and develop it using scientific and hygienic practices.
