GUWAHATI, Sept 25: Gauhati University (GU) is set to launch a four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) beginning from the academic session 2026–27, marking a significant milestone in strengthening teacher education in the region.
The initiative follows the receipt of a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) on September 18, granting GU the nod to offer the programme through its Department of Education.

The ITEP will include integrated B.A.–B.Ed. and B.Sc.–B.Ed. courses in accordance with the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The programme seeks to equip students with both disciplinary knowledge and professional training in a single curriculum, replacing the traditional two-step route of separate undergraduate and B.Ed. degrees.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta welcomed the development, describing it as a transformative step for higher education in Assam. “The introduction of ITEP at Gauhati University will strengthen teacher education in the Northeast and help us prepare a new generation of skilled, innovative, and future-ready educators. This is a crucial step in driving educational transformation not only in Assam but across the region,” he said.
With this initiative, GU joins the select group of universities across India implementing the NEP 2020 roadmap for integrated teacher preparation, ensuring students gain early exposure to pedagogical training, classroom practices, and multidisciplinary learning. The university believes the programme will contribute to raising the overall quality of school education by creating professionally trained teachers with strong academic foundations.
The Department of Education is currently working on the curriculum design and infrastructure readiness to roll out the courses by 2026. University authorities have expressed confidence that the programme will draw aspiring teachers from across the Northeast, further enhancing GU’s role as a hub of academic excellence.
