KHERONI, July 4: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi faced protests during a two-day visit to Karbi Anglong district, even as Congress workers welcomed him at various party units.
According to reports, Gogoi was received warmly by party workers at the Deithor Mandal Congress Committee and Bokajan Block Congress Committee offices.
However, in Santipur under Borpathar Police Station, a section of locals staged demonstrations against him, holding placards with slogans such as “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back,” “Pakistani Agent Gaurav Gogoi Go Back,” and “Congress Party Murdabad.”
The protests came in the backdrop of recent allegations by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over Gogoi’s alleged links with Pakistan, which have triggered political tensions across the state.
Gogoi’s visit was aimed at engaging with grassroots party workers and strengthening the Congress’s organisational presence in the region.
His meetings focused on addressing local concerns and preparing for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections.
The visit also comes shortly after the Congress faced setbacks in the panchayat elections, including in Jorhat, Gogoi’s home constituency.
The protests in Santipur underscore the polarised political atmosphere in the state as parties gear up for future polls.
