JORHAT, March 7: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, political activities have intensified across the state. The Congress party has stepped up its activities in the Jorhat constituency after announcing that Gaurav Gogoi, the Member of Parliament from Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency will contest from the Jorhat Assembly seat.
The Indian National Congress workers in Jorhat are striving to regain the party’s past glory in the constituency.
Accordingly, Gaurav Gogoi was seen actively participating in several programmes in the area on Saturday, effectively sounding the election bugle. In the afternoon, he first visited the Chaolung Sukapha Samannay Kshetra in West Jorhat, where a reception programme was organised in his honour. The event was attended by Jorhat District Congress leaders and a large number of party supporters who warmly welcomed the Congress candidate.
After receiving the greetings of the public and party workers, Gaurav Gogoi told reporters that people, irrespective of religion and caste, want to build a greater Assam and therefore intend to bring the Congress party back to power. He also remarked that the public is dissatisfied with the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party and is determined to hand over the responsibility of governance to the Congress-led alliance this time.
Regarding a possible alliance with Raijor Dal, he said that there is still hope for a partnership. He mentioned that he had not seen what Akhil Gogoi had written on social media but added that discussions about an alliance are ongoing.
Later, Gaurav Gogoi attended several development-related programmes in different wards of Jorhat town. He laid the foundation stone for drainage development work in Ward No 11, followed by the foundation stone for a footpath development project in Ward No 10. In the afternoon, he also laid the foundation stones for the development of a Women’s Committee building in Ward No 13, a school building in Ward No 14, and another drainage development project in Ward No 5.
Afterwards, the Congress candidate participated in a bike rally organised by the Jorhat District Youth Congress Committee.
