JORHAT, May 23: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assam Legislative Assembly would be selected soon, adding that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has deputed observers to oversee the process.

Addressing mediapersons here after a review meeting with district party leaders over the party’s poll debacle in the state, Gogoi, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said the APCC is awaiting the itinerary of the observers coming to Assam for supervising the LoP selection process.

He stated that the party would follow its established organisational procedures in selecting the LoP.

Gogoi, who himself lost from the Jorhat Assembly constituency, said the Congress party is currently reviewing and analysing its unexpected electoral performance to identify shortcomings and take corrective measures while strengthening its organisational structure. The APCC president further said the party would play a constructive role as the Opposition, in accordance with the mandate given by the people of the state. He added that issues such as the rising prices of essential commodities would continue to be raised, noting that Congress legislators had already staged a walkout in the Assembly in protest over the matter.
